The cancer ward itself holds mostly terminally ill patients who receive radical surgery, radiotherapy or intravenous chemotherapy. The patients, however, are used as a vehicle for Solzhenitsyn to expose the inadequacies of the socialist state and at the same time he can expound, at length, on what life would be like in a merit and morally based system of government.
Very few westerners had even heard of this strange looking mushroom until Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn introduced us to it in his 1968 semi-autobiographical novel, The Cancer Ward.
